The prevailing wisdom says you should start your credit card journey with Chase. RSquared respectfully disagrees. For the average person who wants a manageable card lineup that still unlocks meaningful travel rewards, Chase rarely tops my list. Citi does. As luck would have it, I tend to always be in Kenya whenever Citi drops important news. The Citi Strate Premier has once again been my most-used card in Kenya, no foreign transaction fees and no international restrictions getting in the way. Citi's transfer partners (American Airlines, Flying Blue, Virgin, Qatar, and Turkish Airlines, among others) deliver outstanding value, and the ecosystem rewards a little patience with a setup I've come to call the Citi Magnificent 5 or #CM5
The Magnificent 5 is a deliberate evolution beyond the traditional Citi Trifecta. The final lineup is one Citi Strata Premier, three Citi Custom Cash cards, and one Citi Double Cash. The Premier acts as the glue, anchoring the setup with strong everyday earning categories and access to Citi's full transfer partner network. The Custom Cash cards are where the setup really shines: each one earns elevated points on your top eligible spending category up to a monthly cap, so holding three of them lets you cover multiple categories like groceries, gas, and dining simultaneously. The Double Cash rounds things out as a flat-rate earner for everything that doesn't fit a bonus category.
You don't apply for five cards in a weekend. The build follows a sequence designed to work around Citi's product change rules and application velocity limits. You start with the Premier, then add a Custom Cash a few months later, followed by a Double Cash, and eventually the Citi Strata as a strategic placeholder. From there, the magic happens through product changes: convert the Double Cash into a second Custom Cash, apply for a fresh Double Cash, and later convert the base Strata into a third Custom Cash. The whole arc can take two years, and that's fine. The point is to be intentional, not fast. If you want the full step-by-step (including timing windows and the product change process), I cover it in detail here.
If your goal is a small, hassle-free wallet that still delivers real travel value, this setup punches well above its weight. The five cards work together by funneling into a single ThankYou Points pool, and the stacked 5x earning across three Custom Cash cards is what truly supercharges the math. I'm currently one Double Cash short of completing my own Magnificent 5 (I'm letting some hard pulls roll off before reapplying in June), but I already get tremendous use out of what I have. If you're tired of chasing every shiny new card and want a setup you can actually run for years, the Citi Magnificent 5 deserves a serious look.
